Movies: Iron Man

This weekend was the release of what I assume to be the most anticipated movie of the month, Iron Man! I originally wanted to catch the first show Thursday night but circumstances didn’t allow this to be possible. I did, however, manage to get to the theater with friends and family on Friday and “WOW!” is what comes to mind.
I have to admit that I barely follow the Marvel comics, therefore most of my thoughts will be based on the “general, non-comic book related” viewer thoughts. I know the beginning of Iron Man and a couple of other Marvel characters because my friends are really into the Marvel universe (I favor DC comics). My first opinion about the movie was that it really stayed true to the comic book. As we do with all movies we watch, we compared the film to others within the genre and declared Iron Man to be the best (I exclude Batman from this decision because Batman is a completely different type of comic book movie. It may have something with the general feelings the movies provoke, but it’s just different. Not sure if you disagree.) Anyway, in terms of an origin movie Iron Man achieved its goal.
The writers didn’t change the story by much. Instead, they took what was already written, and created witty dialogue. The casting department scored a perfect 10 from me. Choosing Robert Downey Jr. was fitting to who Tony Starks is. His growth from a massaginist, selfish “pig” to a caring, powerful humanitarian was believeable. I honestly felt his need to take responsibility for the weapons he created. The action scenes were believable too and though some considered it to be rather predictable, other than his magnetic plate, I didn’t expect what was being thrown at me.
In terms of alluding to a future movie. The possible intro of “War Machine” and Nick Fury is a clear sign that we’re getting more in the future. How much more? Not quite sure, but if the future movies are anything like this movie, bring it on! I say, if you haven’t seen it, its well worth your $12.
