Review: The Bravery

Rating: ★★★★★★★★★☆

I’ve been wanting to write this “review” for a while now, but am always getting caught up with other things that I forget to do so. Fall 2004, I fell in love with a band named, Franz Ferdinand. The lead singer had such a smooth yet rough voice and their beats were off the top. That year I went off to college at Adelphi University and began to explore MUSIC. I’ve always listened to music, but I’d never gone out of my way to search for things that weren’t on the top charts. During the same time, iTunes became a very influential tool at school. I would always keep my eyes and ears open to their “artist of the week” and their free downloads. Alright, why the long intro? Well, it was through one of the free downloads that I heard about The Bravery for the first time.

Originally, the first time I had actually heard the band was when they released ” An Honest Mistake.” I remember being in Forever 21, shopping, and hearing this song on the radio. I went to my dorm to look it up on iTunes and I realized it was The Bravery and not Franz Ferdinand. Well, I purchased their album on iTunes and soon realized what a mistake that was. The album was horrible. I only liked two songs and one of them was a freebie.

When they released their second album, I downloaded it. I was prepared for the worst, a repeat of their first really. But, I was soon proven very wrong. I synced my Zune, hopped on the train, and found myself really liking ALL of their songs. They don’t remind me of Franz Ferdinand anymore, now they remind me of The Strokes, who I LOVE!!

I recommend people pick up a copy, or download it. If you like alternative/electronica, you really can’t go wrong. I especially love Fistful of Sand. I know I’m going to sound rather dorky when I admit why I liked this song the most. It had to do with the opening beat [+ the chorus]. Something about this beat made me think of old school video games. I’m not sure why exactly, but it brings a sense of nostalgia and I love it!

Thoughts on Dunny Series 4

Last week, Thursday September 27th, was the official street date for the Series 4 Dunnys. I was bummed out because I didn’t get a chance to run over to MPH and get me some, it also doesn’t help that I have yet to get paid. Anyway, I should first clarify that I’m not too thrilled on all the designs, but there definitely are some designs I NEEDED yesterday. I want MAD’s design, which my Mr. was lucky enough to get, Huck Gee’s designs [OMG!! Those are so kickass!! They're insane], Sket’s King Kong which features a little fuzzy skin(though he has yet to watch King of Kong, come on Sket!) Frank Kozik’s super rare dunny and a couple other ones. I was disappointed with JLed’s design. I am a big fan of his toxic swamp stuff and I really liked the Finders Keepers, but this dunny just wasn’t up to par with me. I should admit that I am still searching for some of his older dunnys. I think, sadly enough, JLed’s dunny is the only one I wasn’t too keen on.

Moving on to my complaint. The Mr. ended up surprising me Friday night with both an 12″ red geisha and a couple of Series 4 Dunnys!! I opened up eager to see my luck. I was pretty much happy with all the ones I got, and a couple the Mr. donated to me, but upon closer inspection I became very disappointed. I’ve run into people who have been into collecting urban vinyls a lot longer than I have and I always hear them complain about the quality. Up to now, I’ve had nothing to complain about since I had nothing to compare my vinyls to. Well, I began to do my usual hugging and kissing dunny appreciation ritual, when I noticed their arms. They sucked! They felt like cheap plastic that hardly moves. Ugh! Actually, they feel like those cheap 99¢ toys made in China [no diss to China]. Either way I still love to hug them, but this better not continue as it will not be good for business.

Resident Evil: Ex-Stink!-tion

Rating: ★☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆

I shall start by first noting that, I dreaded writing this review. I knew I needed to warn the world of the horror that was the movie, but simply couldn’t bring myself to write about it. Resident Evil: Extinction, the 3rd, and rumored to be final movie of the RE trilogy, was a nightmare.

Since there was a lot more wrong than good, I shall start with the negative:

  1. Alice is the “savior” of what is left of the world. Why did I chose savior, she has this very annoying glow to her face. I’m not trying to say she looked great or bad, I mean the directors literally put this glow on her face that made her look immaculate. This look was annoying throughout the movie.
  2. Zombie dogs were once again attacking the woman, but once we’ve seen it done once- we’ve seen it done a million times.
  3. Alice’s blood, again the key to our saving grace, has created angrier zombies. I was almost reminded of Bub from Day of the Dead, except he was cute and friendly. These zombies just carried a new strain of the T-Virus and…
  4. …turned freaking Dr. Isaacs into some mutant with a GOD complex.
  5. Claire is an interesting character. She’s a great shoot and at the same time sucks arse.
  6. There were some cheesy dialogue
  7. There were useless scenes, e.g., When Alice stops at the gas station and fights the zombie dogs after being attacked by some losers. How did push the story line forward? What was it’s purpose?
  8. Also, ASHANTI? She’s mad ass! I am sorry for the hate. I am so tired of actresses, Ashanti and Megan Good, tend to fall into this category– they’re these head rolling, lip puckering, getting by on their “ass” type of actresses and it drives me nuts that people are casted for these movies. She was not a good choice for Nurse Betty, and what makes it worse is that she didn’t even do that much nursing in the first place. The only guy she took care of, Mike Epps, was the man she’s been fucking. Not just that, she was too busy flirting with him to notice the big ass bite he had on his chest.
  9. Finally, *SPOILER ALERT* since I have to go to bed and there are way too many things that made me unhappy about the film to continue, CLONES?!! WTH? Not only is Alice now going after Wesker (who sort of sucked too), how? By using the hundreds of clones created by the Umbrella Corp. BLAH I tell you, blah!

Now on to the positive:

  1. There was a scene where Alice uses her “powers” to kill all the zombie infested crows. That scene, which lit up the sky of death, was AMAZING. I do believe it was the only scene I liked. Thank you.

Shoot ‘Em Up thoughts

Today, thanks to the lovely people over at Helio; Santos and I ended up getting hooked up with screening passes to Shoot ‘Em Up. I had recently saw the trailer, but once I arrived to the theater I realized that I knew nothing about this movie. So, maybe I was the perfect target audience to watch the movie, because I didn’t have any preconceived thoughts or opinions about the movie; now that I have seen it, this is what I thought…

**SPOILER ALERT**

The movie begins with Clive sort of hanging out on a bench, eating his carrot, unphased by the pregnant woman who happens to run by him– CRYING! He’s such an oddly monotone character and I must admit that I’ve alway wanted to see the human version of Bugs Bunny, who happens to be a great shoot. He aides some random woman when honchos are trying to kill her, he helps her give birth and somehow manages to shoot the umbilical cord to finish the delivery process. Needless to say, the woman ends up getting killed, so the rest of the movie he’s protecting this newborn child [Oliver] and trying to figure out who the hell is trying to kill him.

In order to feed the baby, he takes him to a brothel where Monica Bellucci’s character works. They help make men’s fantasies a reality, she handles the Freudian needs of men, though not explained in the beginning she’s lactating and he wants her to help protect the baby. She refuses and somehow the bad guys, led by Paul Giamatti’s character, end up finding her anyway. She has no information, but of course they’re hard-headed and don’t listen. It’s okay though, because Clive is always a hero in this movie. He shows up out of nowhere and kills off every bad guy in the movie. In some very unbelievable ways. The audience couldn’t help but laugh at a number of murder scenes. You may ask yourself, why?

How about, stabbing multiple people in the eye, chest and mouth with a carrot. YES, a CARROT! Somehow he has a whole stock of carrots throughout the movie, “it’s good for the eyes.” Also, how about shooting one guy multiple times in different parts of his body to make his reflexes shoot someone else? Or elaborate set-ups within a time span of 5 minutes that kill off about 30 extras. hahahaha. The movie was awesome you guys… I couldn’t decide if this was the best movie of the summer (since to me King of Kong and Live Free, Die Hard have that title), but so far I believe it’s the best movie of the fall.

I should’ve started this review earlier since I am not sleepy and feel as though I’m not telling you everything I should about the movie… I also spent some time searching for a movie review plugin (which I have now found). Since I try to watch a new movie per week, I thought the plugin was a necessity for this site. Thanks to [Channel-ai] for the plugin. I gave the movie 9 stars because it was simply that entertaining!

Fido…fetch boy, fetch!

Today Forbidden Planet hosted a movie screening for Fido. Fido; coming to a theater near you June 15th, 2007; is a story of a little boy named Timmy Robinson and his pet zombie, Fido. Yes folks, Fido is a zombie flick. I am quite delighted to share that this film was hilarious. Its satire comments on our society are priceless and to be quite honest I couldn’t get enough of them.

The movie, set around the late 50’s- early 60’s, sort of reminded me of World War Z by Max Brooks, in the sense that it’s taking place after a “zombie war”. Zomcom; being the corporation that immediately turns crazed zombies into useful members of society through a leash that “contains their desire for flesh”; has found a way to domesticate zombies—allowing humans to bring zombies into their homes and not feel threatened.

The movie focuses on a family who seem bizarre at first, but apparently the social norm has changed dramatically during this era. If you don’t own a zombie the neighbors will talk about you, you’d be the laughing stock of the town. Timmy is a lonely boy whose father ignores him and the kids at school see as the perfect target to bully. His mother is no help; when he reaches out to her, she’s concerned about how messy he looks. Things begin looking up for Timmy when his mother convinces his dad to have a zombie in their home. He quickly becomes Timmy’s best friend, rescuing him from the bullies and always up for a game of fetch.

Unfortunately Fido’s collar somehow shuts off and he eats a mean old lady in the park. This obviously poses a problem for Timmy, if you aren’t responsible for your zombies families are cast to the “wildness”. That’s the other side of the fence, where no one looks out for you and zombies lurk about in anticipation. Timmy’s forced to take matters into his own hands to protect his friend… soon though, things get worse. Thankfully Timmy’s mother, played by Carrie Anne Moss (known to the common population as Trinity from The Matrix), becomes a supportive mother who oddly enough seems to have fallen in love with Fido.

I thought that every cast member chosen for this movie did a great job. Since this was a movie screening, Billy Connolly was there for a brief Q& A. He was hilarious, and you’d swear he was drunk. He shared with the crowd that his double actually died on set from a drug overdose– obviously this is horrible; and yet he couldn’t help but laugh. He was like, “I thought it would be cool to share that story since you’re watching this movie about the dead and he really died.” He also talked about not knowing whether he could be still enough to play a zombie, so he asked the director; “why me?!”

Finally, this movie is strange and doesn’t really follow any zombie rules—other than the undead factor. These zombies are the newer models of Bub’s. I love them. The cast was great, the display of classic cars was awesome… and well we all just really want to see Timmy happy. I would love to own this movie when it comes out on DVD, America just needed a new movie in the zombie category and this definitely filled the void. Check it out and tell me what you think.

Argh! My thoughts on Pirates

Friday came along and the number one thing to do for the weekend was to go see Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End. I was very excited to see the movie, mainly because part two ended so blah to me. I know the ending was supposed to let you know there would be a third part on its way, but it wasn’t even a cliffhanger, it was just there. So I wanted this movie to end. I shall warn you all now that *SPOILERS* are ahead. Before that though… If you haven’t seen it and you definitely know you’re going to see it, watch the movie past the credits. There is an additional scene. Now…
