Scene: Shin Tanaka Night
Last week, I shared I'd be attending New York-Tokyo and Frank's Chop Shop party in honor of Shin Tanaka. The art of paper toys (not origami-- although I also appreciate that form of art too) have been...

Last week Friday, was the 2nd annual New Moon show at MyPlasticHeart. I’ve been waiting for this show for a while, especially when I began to overhear the names of some of the participating artists. Lou Pimentel, Andrew Bell, kaNO, Stella Im Hultberg, Yumiko Kayukawa, Leontine Greenberg, and many more of my favorite artists and people were in one single exhibit. And!!! I scored a sketch from Stella, this time for real– not the whole I’m so excited and I’m holding my sketchbook ready to ask you for your soul and in my excitement have forgotten to ask you for a sketch kind of way. hahaha. >___<
As you can tell from my run-on sentence, the night was a blast and I even took cupcakes to the opening. They’re too rich I’m told, so I will work on my recipe… in the meantime, hit the jump to check out my favorite pieces and some photos from the ultra-packed gallery.
The year 2009 has been one that has delivered a plethora of amazing art shows and toy releases. Last night I was looking through my Flickr, and I realized that I attended at least 26 events this year. Well, with the announcement of When Hell Freezes Over, a custom show featuring Lou Pimentel’s Cranston Fellows Jr. resin figure at MyPlasticHeart, 2010 already seems to be delivering the goods.
I saw the line-up of participating artists, and it’s really got some of my absolutely favorite artists! Wow. I’m very lucky to live a few blocks from MPH, because I wouldn’t want to miss this show. More information and sneak peeks as they’re released. By the way, Doktor A fucking rules! Yeah!
There’s a special place in my heart designated to give all things Shawnimal some love– and when I spotted his Pocket Pork series at MPH’s booth, that little area in my heart melted away. Series 3 brought a variation of coloways and expressions. My favorite being the mutant and sleeping porkies. They retailed for $11.99, but are currently all sold out. =( Though I’m sad I can’t pick some up at MPH, I’m glad Shawn hit another home run with this series.
MPH (myplasticheart Booth #866) added the photo above as a sneak peek of the golden monk they’ll be releasing this year during NYCC. VeggieSomething and CrazyLable have teamed up to bring us, Yoto. He comes equipped with his own Chicago Bulls gear and will measure about 3″ which is already enough cuteness for me. According to VinylPulse, he is limited to 96 pieces worldwide and will only be available during NYCC. He’ll retail for a very fair $20.
I keep noticing that the prices for most of the figures I want to pick up during NYCC are fairly decent, and then I begin to add things up and realize that it’s starting to make a hole in my wallet and I haven’t even attended.
MPH has posted my interview with Brent Nolasco on their site. This interview took place briefly before he had his solo show at MPH on June 13th. Check it out if you want to learn more about Brent and his background. [MyPlasticHeart]
And so it continues, the NYCC wrap up. I had the pleasure of hanging out with the MPH crew all weekend (they roll deep) and seeing all the things they are planning on releasing this year. Currently, I have a giveaway for one of the Koguma Babies that will be released later this year, the solid black koguma is ??? of 150. Well, the full piece is above, Koguma’s will be released with a totally cozy speaker swivel chair. I wish I could lay on a chair, naked with my stuff all out there. His little pee-pee is cute as a button.
In addition to the TokyoPlastic/MPHlabs Koguma prototype, MPH also unleashed their A-Type prototype. I love the figure. Great way of displaying their “plastic heart”. The piece also manages to stay true to Andrew Bell’s style. I didn’t know he was the creator at first, and ignoring the tab that informs you of such, you could tell from the leg/foot style that this was something Andrew dished out. The photo above show’s a snippet of Julie’s design for the current WIP.
Let’s see how many people were paying attention? Do people remember when I posted about Tokyo Plastic’s sneak peek? If not, you can see it here: TokyoPlastic Teaser. Well, the fine folks over at MPH, Vince and Bik, have just offered to sponsor a giveaway!! How awesome is that? What is it? It’s a limited 1 of 150 TokyoPlastic x mphlabs Koguma!!! Tomorrow, the giveaway will be set up for people to start commenting for a chance to win. Make sure you stop by to enter.
P.S. MPH’s sponsored giveaway will be the last on this site. iheartcoolstuff.com is going through some major changes… if you’re a member, you’ve gotten an email about this. Good Luck!
I’d known when MPH posted the above image that their surprise was going to be Tokidoki’s Sandy in a platinum colorway. I was excited for the release, because Sandy is actually one of my favorite characters, which by the way, I’ve recently noticed I don’t own. She’s green and spiky, uh– that just automatically means she rules. How do you think I reacted when I saw the latest photo release?
She looks so wonderful in silver! Even more exciting is the addition of more moofia blind boxes. I knew they were going to be releasing a pink milk figure, she was printed on the inside of Mozzarella’s packaging, so it was about time, but I totally did not expect the rice milk and half-&-half. AWESOME!!
So now, I ask the inevitable questions: Who’s going to NYCC? And when are we meeting up?!! I’ll be roaming around all weekend, because I can.
As I had previously updated, Friday was Nakanari and Dave “Outta My Mind” Quiles’ Techno Babble show at MPH. Though I didn’t arrive early, since I had to go to a meeting, I was pleasantly surprised when I arrived to a steady flow of visitors coming in and out of the shop.
