KO Jack and Lucky

Image taken from Kathie Olivas' Flickr

Earlier this week, I noticed Kathie Olivas updated her flickr with the image located above. I was immediately intrigued and dozens of questions arose. Who is Jack? Who is Lucky? Will this be released in resin or vinyl? When can I get one of these? Why can’t I get any answers?!! And then, like magic, a note appeared on the “plasma edition”– which refers to that translucent black figure.

Plasma edition: Atlanta Dragon Con Exclusive
6″ semi-transparent blood red resin sculpture
edition of 40

I’m not sure who is releasing this figure, I don’t know if it’s part of a set– but since she did refer to it as an edition, I’m guessing the alternate colorway will be a later release? I don’t know how much it’ll be, but what I do know, is that I am really digging it. Can someone help me score one? PRETTY PLEASE.

SDCC ‘09: Saki’s WANT List

Here is a very downscaled and highly edited list of the items I really want from SDCC. Thankfully, to a certain degree, due to the economy, there aren’t many releases this year. At the end of the post I’ll add up how much all of this would cost me if I was there.amandavisellsdcc_revealed-580x444

First on my list is Amanda Visell’s labbit. It retails for $50, and it turns out it’s 5″ tall, not 10″ like I originally believed. MUST HAVE!! I think her art translated very well on this shape and I am loving the tone of the wood.

sdcconosushi

Andrew Bell’s O-NO! Sushi is my second must. I’ve been a huge fan of his O-No! sticker/print for ages. Well, SDCC officially celebrates its release from 2d to 3D form. Yay!! Two colorways will be released, the Blue is the SDCC exclusive– the red one will be released later in the year. These are $30 each, and the Mr. wants one too.

big_sal

I posted about Big Sal– now, I’ll definitely be getting her. Thanks to a friend who is helping me out– I get to add Kathie Olivas and Brant Peters’ kaiju creation to my collection. If you’re going to pick this up, it’ll cost you $25 at the Super7 Booth and will be available on Thursday.

cosmic-pennie-sdcc

I haven’t been lucky lately with my hook-ups in regards to Kathie’s Scavengers. I have yet to complete my regular colorway collection– but Cosmic Pennie is one of my favorite characters in Series 2, and I’d really love to get it for my collection. These, like all other exclusive Scavengers, will run you $20 and will be available at ToyTokyo’s booth.

sddcc_2set

This latest set caught me by surprise. I didn’t realize that Mindstyle would be releasing another SDCC set– and this one contains a 3″ Two-Faced Hazel. I have yet to obtain any of the 3″ Hazels, and I would love this one to be my first. I wouldn’t mind having the other characters as I’m a bit of a fan of all the artists included in this set: Ron English, Kathie Olivas, Buff Monster, Doktor A and Brandt Peters. I’m also a HUGE fan of black and white figures and I sometimes believe, less color is better. This set costs $130 and will be available on Saturday from 1-3pm at Mindstyle’s booth I believe.

sdcctoynerd

Rotofugi along with FormulaWerks have been creating awesome t-shirts lately, and it seems that at this year’s SDCC, the shirt above will be unleashed. I want!! I heart toys and I’m a nerd, so I would wear the combination of the two words proudly. These shirts will be available on all days throughout the con and they’ll run you a mere $16. Thanks to SpankyStokes, I’ll have this in my hands after the con.

sdccthesisters

Last, but really not least– I would’ve loved to be at SDCC so I could meet Jhonen Vasquez and get hooked up with one of these sweet prints for Bioshock 2.

Jhonen will be signing at the 2K Games booth on Saturday July 25th from 2-4 PM at San Diego Comicon, and apparently there will be 500 of the prints available.

I’m guessing the prints are free since no price has been specified. If you’re a fan of his works, which I am, this is a must stop. Please take some pictures and share them with me. =)

The Total Cost: $301.00

SDCC ‘09: Big Sal

big_sal

I’ll start off by saying that I’ve never really been into Kaiju.  In case you’re not sure what kaiju is, it literally means monster or strange beast. Therefore, it’s safe to assume that kaiju figures tend to be monsters.

Well, though I’ve never really been into kaiju– this summer, Super7 is at the top of my list in regards to SDCC exclusives I want. I’ll start off with “Big Sal” by none other than, Kathie Olivas and Brandt Peters. I’m not sure if I’m attracted to this piece because it’s a collaboration of two great artists, or whether I’m really just loving the look and shape. What I do know for sure is that I want it.

I’m loving the creamy translucent blue and I’m really favoring the white and red stripes. I’m not sure how tall this figure stands, but it’s got a very affordable $25 price tag. It’ll be available on Thursday at Super7’s booth. Check out some more SDCC exclusives on Super7’s shiny new site.

Just spotted this new original piece on Kathie Olivas’ flickr, and I was so blown away by it, I had to share. I’m sure we all know I’m a huge fan, and with works like the piece above, how could I deny her my fandom?

One of the reasons I’m a fan of Kathie’s works are because though I find her characters to be cute– they have a creepy aura to them. I interviewed her a while back, but things kind of fell through and I was never able to publish it on the site it was meant to be published– I should ask if it’s okay to share on my site, even though the interview took place last year around her solo show at MPH and the group show at The Opera Gallery.

Anyway, this piece is very different, at least to me. Not only does it seem to be the darkest yet, with the black surrounding the character– which bears the question, what is in the darkness that haunts? But, I think her character style looks more evolved here, don’t you think? I’m not sure if it’s because this is the most “human” character I’ve seen, or the soft glow on the cheeks, or because the image is much darker– but it seems different. I never took an art history class, so I’m not familiar with the termanology to describe this work– but I know many of you are. What do you think? Check out her site and tell me if you agree.

I’m not sure where this piece is being submitted too, or how much it costs, but I do know that I appreciate the darkness and I’d love to add it to my collection.

Jensen from G1988 posted this video on their blog earlier today. The primary reason why he posted it was because it has a large canvas piece created by Kathie Olivas and Brandt Peters. The canvas is actually a “pivotal” moment in the short film. I, unlike Jensen, have a secondary reason– she goes by the name: Julie Benz. =) I watched the short film and although I couldn’t see her face at first, I recognized her voice. <3

Hi! It seems like ages since I’ve posted and for once it has nothing to do with me being lazy. I went to Canada last week with my middle school and high school students to participate in a series of Basketball tournaments. My little ones lost, both male and female, but both Varsity teams won!! Then I got super sick, and I’ve been on bed-rest since Monday.

Today I spent the better half of my day securing my NYCC passes. It’s official, IHCS is officially “PRESS” status. Woohoo! Now it’s time to catch up. I’ll start with the two-faced Asia exclusive Hazel by Kathie Olivas. Hazel, though I don’t own her in any size, is one of my very favorite Scavengers. The release of Hazel in this colorway brings an additional joy to my life. The colorway is quite pleasing to the eyes, wouldn’t you agree?

She hasn’t been released yet, but if you’re interested in purchasing one for yourself (or me), you can go to gunnzo.com- the only location in the US who will be distributing the red colorway. They’re currently taking pre-orders for $90, so you better hurry, she’s limited to 500 pieces worldwide. I would buy one for myself right now, but fate always seems to screw me over when I want things the most, so I have to pass on this opportunity. =( It would’ve been the perfect birthday present to myself. Series 2 of Sketchel

Series 2 of Sketchel

Sketchels? It’s the first time I hear [read] the word and am quickly become acquainted with what it offers me. Sketchel, it seems, is Jeremyville’s own line of messenger bags– btw, messenger bags are my favorite types of bags. I gather from Charuca, who we know has uber-kawaii styled characters, that he’s doing something similar to that of Jansport in recruiting artists to make a one-of-a-kind bag, with the exception that Jansport releases a limited run while Jeremyville really only sells ONE. Scanning through what is currently available, Charuca has 2 designs, the latest being pictured above. Hit the jump for more details…

Opera Gallery: Young Blood

I’m in a real dilemma. It seems 3 shows are opening the same night, and I don’t know which 2 to attend. I’m pushing it by planning to attend 2 openings, but I know I’m definitely not missing Kathie Olivas’ Uninvited Guests show at MPH– but she’s also going to have some works in Opera Gallery’s Young Blood show.

Young Blood will open October 17th at NYC’s Opera Gallery and it will host 15 talented artists– both national and international artists. Some of my very favorites will include; Kathie Olivas, Brandt Peters and Camilla d’Errico!! I’m trying to attend this during the VIP night, but I have no sources at the Opera Gallery and I highly doubt I’ll be able to score an entry. So– shall I go meet Camilla who’s finally coming in from Vancouver? Or should I go to the Obama show right after Kathie’s Uninvited Guests show? Help! If you’d like to see the preview, click here.

*Correction: I have yet to confirm whether Camilla will be at the event or not, I misinterpreted something on her blog and assumed she would be. Sorry about that. >__<*

Have you submitted your photo?

Have you submitted your photo to October Toys’ contest? Don’t remember what it’s about? You seriously have to pay attention people. In order to get a chance to win the exclusive Dragon Con Aubrie, you need to post a photo of yourself with your Scavengers collection. I have a feeling I’m going to get disqualified, simply because I’m holding my KO dunny, which is technically NOT a Scavenger. If such is the case, then a couple of others will get eliminated too. Anyway, the above photo is my entry. Now head on over and submit your photo, NOW!

You’re Invited to “Uninvited Guests”

Finally!! I am going to stop by KidRobot tomorrow to check out Kathie Olivas’ live painting– but it’s official! MPH has just announced on their boards that they will be hosting “Uninvited Guests” a mixed media show put on by Kathie herself. My face is already in smiling overload mode. I’ve been waiting to see some of her custom works in person and it seems there’s going to be a variety of things at the show: paintings, sketches, and customs. I can’t wait to hang with her and Brandt in a smaller arena than that of NYCC. I hope I have enough money in the bank to purchase something for myself. More info when it’s available, but in the meantime, mark October 17th on your calendars.
