Dreams to Dreams: A Custom DCTO show

Friday, November 7th, 2008

The first time I’d encountered Dacosta Bayley’s work was when the Mr. and I noticed his GID “ball” in MPH. I liked the look of it, the Mr. liked that it glowed in the dark and the DCTO ended up coming home with us. It wasn’t until we got home that I sat down and traced every detail of the packaging. Every word of the background story was read. Every image on the box was given full attention and I caressed each curve of the physical object I came to know as the DCTO: Dreams Come True Object. Though it was the Mr. who bought it, I was in love with every aspect of the figure– the background story was captivating and to this day it has not escaped my mind. The drawings were “super fresh” and clean. I was impressed.

When Dacosta made his way to NYCC ‘07, he and I became close fairly quickly. I’d already been in contact with him through email and it was a pleasure meeting the man behind the toy that gave me some inspiration. Which is why, now, I follow his every move (whether it be voluntarily or not– I’m sounding like such a stalker right now). Fresh off the press blog entry, Dacosta drops news of his upcoming Dreams to Dreams show opening December 6th at the Japanese American National Museum in LA. Custom Speakers by Brent Nolasco

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008

I absolutely love Brent’s style– it’s not this cutesey stuff that I’m normally into, but he has these very well defined lines and such bold colors, I can’t help but love his intricate work. Not to mention, the man is too cool for words as I’ve had the pleasure of hanging out with him a couple of times this year. Well, a buddy of mine wanted his asthetically boring speakers to have a little more style… (more…)

August’s Upcoming Shows

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

I’m not sure if NYC residents have noticed, but we’ve got plenty of shows to keep us busy in the month of August. I thought I’d make a rundown of all the shows (which I’ve blogged about before) and whether or not I shall be around. First up, Julie West’s Sickly Sweet taking place this Friday at My Plastic Heart.

Best part? I was able to score an interview with Julie (thanks to the wonderful peeps at MPH) and will hopefully be available during the show, but I’ll share a link when it is posted. Yay! It was loads of fun talking to her and hope that you all come out and see her. This has definitely been added to my calendar. Yay! (more…)

Huck Gee: The Golden Claw and More

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

We remember Huck’s Skullhuntress right? At last, it was only a week ago when he dropped 10 of her on his eBay shop– making him an instant “high roller.” Well, the updates have just been delivered in a nicely packaged email. Check it out after the jump. (more…)

Custom Show: House of Liu

Charuca MeiMei

Oh, I swear, Flickr is the best place to find out what artists are up to. Charuca has recently added pictures of a custom she did for the House of Liu show at the APW Gallery. The show will be August 22nd, and will host numerous DiDi and MeiMei customs. It seems the designer, James Liu, has sent one of his blank babies around to different artists. Hit the jump for more info and pictures of Charuca’s MeiMei. ♥ (more…)

MPH Presents: Sickly Sweet

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

I miss visiting the wonderful people of MPH. Unfortunately, because I’ve chosen not to work during the summer… I’ve shown loads of self-control so all my money could be spent during SDCC. I are a shameful character. Luckily, MPH is going to be hosting the beloved Julie West for (what I believe is) her first solo show in NYC (??).

Julie West really is a talented artist and an amazing personality. I am forever grateful to her for hooking me up with a custom kaniza during ToyQube’s 3rd year celebration and release party. Well, I have the pleasure of hanging with her again on August 8th when she displays her new paintings, prints, and super sweet customs all based on her sugary theme.

If you’re planning a trip to NYC this summer, I suggest you try to come up that weekend. Julie’s going to make the trip herself from the UK, so it’d be a great time to meet and hang out with her. More details or sneak peeks when they come, woohoo!

BTW, maybe I’ll see Tim there?

Custom Delights: BATMAN!!

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008

I think I totally stole the “customs delight” title from TOMOPOP. Doh! Sorry about that guys [and lady friends]. Anyway, the above custom is too awesome for words. I mean, he comes with his own came and custom harpoon gun!! Yay… who’s got their tickets? Not me, at least not for the IMAX. I heard that people bought loads of them and put them on ebay for $100 a pair. [via.] Hit the jump to see the latest poster for The Dark Knight. (more…)

Custom Delights: AstroBoy!

Monday, June 30th, 2008

I’m on a total Dacosta high! This man really hits the spot for me. I’ve been on a total AstroBoy craze, spot the iGoogle post, and then he creates this little guy. I love it. And, I especially love that all of his designs always look so clean. Oh Dacosta, I believe this is a success!

Plushform Part 3?

Saturday, June 21st, 2008

We’re one day shy of a week away from the Plushform Show at the Rotofugi Gallery next week, and some friends are beginning to post their sneak peeks. Above is Dacosta’s currently untitled sneak peek. Clearly, he’s a sumo wrestler. Right?!! I’m excited to see photos of his lower half. Hit the jump to see kaNO’s (who I could’ve sworn I’d posted earlier) and Steve Talkowski’s sketchbot! (more…)

After Thoughts: Brent Nolasco’s Solo Show

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008

Last Friday, I left you with a peak at Brent’s custom Kaws which he created for his Broken Hearts and Stolen Souls show at MPH. Above is a side view of the piece of work. I believe it’s the piece I took the most pictures of, I’m in love with it. I only wish I had $1900 to drop on it, it truly is magnificent. Please hit the jump to continue reading and to see more images of the show. (more…)
