It seems I am consistently late on my posts– but I promise it’s not for lack of trying– this is the wonderful time in the year when a lot of things are happening. =) A little over 2 weeks ago I’d posted about Patrick Francisco’s show at APW. The show consisted of original works (both canvas and customs) by Patrick Francisco, along with works from two of his friends; Jerome Miller and Polina Soshkina.
After conversing with Patrick a couple of weeks before the show, I was pretty excited to see not only the customs he’d been sharing sneak peeks of, but also the works of these two unknown artists. According to Patrick, Jerome Miller focused on Science Fiction themes, while Polina Soshkina had a fine arts background– how’s that for 3 separate concentrations within one show?
If you don’t know Patrick Francisco– I tend to describe him as “the guy who paints monkeys/gorillas.” There’s a lot more to his style, but his custom works have payed close attention to our brothers from another century– if you believe in the scientific explanation for our existence. I’ve seen so many sneak peeks of his custom Munnys and Dunnys on his Flickr page, and I’ve seen his work in person once or twice– but I got a very gratifying dose of his art during the exhibit.Below you’ll see some of my favorite pieces from the show.

I’ll start off with the Uglydoll Action Figures. You may have noticed from the previous post that I just did an Action Figure Unboxing. If you’re unfamiliar with the Uglydolls, I recommend you take a look at it to see the dramatic make-over Patrick has achieved with these customs. I knew he was playing with the idea of customizing these Uglies, and when I saw them in person during the show I was very impressed with the execution. My favorite Ugly was Babo because he’s got the most ‘junk in his trunk’ — and now he’s mine!! =)

I am always saddened that I am not a skater simply because there are many decks out there that I would totally be rocking. I have fallen in love with these decks. When I asked Patrick about them– he shared that these decks were the reason why he began to explore the life and death theme. These decks, which were originally created for a different show are what inspired the munny below.

I love the blue hues that Patrick works with on this munny, the orchid is quite splendid. I also fell in love with the other munny that contained the same color pallet– the birds on the munny’s belly are what made me fall in love with it. You can check pictures of the other munny on the slideshow above.

Finally, one of my last favorite pieces from the show was actually created by Polina. Like I mentioned before, she has a fine arts background and although I’d never seen her works before, I fell in love with her elephants. Elephants cause a nostalgia within me, so I’m sure that played a big role on why I fell in love with this piece– but to be honest with you– all of her work was amazing. I tend to gravitate to black and white pieces, sketches and ink works, and she definitely satisfied this preference.
I wish I’d found the APW Gallery a lot sooner, since it’s the first time I head out to a show since they moved from Lower Manhattan. I would’ve loved to take close-up shots of all of the pieces so you could see what I saw. I wish I’d posted about this sooner, so people could head on over to the gallery and check out the show– but I’ll update info in terms of available pieces and their prices.
