Keep it Ninja: the Evening with Shawnimals and Friends

Monday, December 10th, 2007

Ninja Sunrise Friday was Shawnimal’s Keep it Ninja release party. It was over at MPH (which will forever stand for My Plastic Heart). I arrived a bit late to the show, but not for the party!! When I got there I was flushed with the excitement of not only meeting both Shawn and Dacosta, but all the people that I haven’t seen since God knows how long. The show was packed with Shawn’s new Zombie Ninja and Super Ninja, both were hand made. There were also felt collages available for sale and small prints on wood. Part of the celebration was the release of the new micro ninja plushies. I got myself one. I would normally purchase a dozen or more until I got all the ones I want, but I finally got the chance to pick up my ROBOTS!!

The night was full of random conversations and my brain was simply not performing at top speed that night. I had to go to a panel about Latin American relations with the US. While I was walking around taking pictures I kept walking into conversations. My favorite was when the men were talking about the Kid Robot labbit stools. I walked in at the word stool, so I thought they were talking about regular stools. Someone made a joke that I had one in my home and I claimed to have 3!! Problem was, I meant three regular stools not labbits, which cost about $1000 each. I cleared that up, but the same kind of situations kept happening all night.

 DCTOs

While I was at MPH I was talking to Dacosta. He and my boyfriend were having the infamous mac vs pc conversation. Dacosta rooting for Mac while my boyfriend, for PC. Vince and I stood at the sidelines until they came up with Excel and Numbers. I am a total Excel lover and hearing Dacosta talk about numbers got Vince and I excited in ways only nerds can understand. hahaha. Dacosta is such a down to earth kind of fellow, and to be quite honest- based on the pieces he has put out there (DCTO’s pictured above) you can tell how humble he is. We were supposed to sit for an interview, but when we went out to dinner (22 people to be exact) we got caught up with a bunch of other conversations.

I’ll write about the rest of the night and Saturday tomorrow. I’m sleepy. Classes are almost done people, almost!

The Uglydoll Giveaway results

Sunday, December 9th, 2007

Ladies and Gentlemen,

The turn out for the Uglydoll giveaway was much smaller than I had anticipated. This is good though, it just tells me what the crowd is interested in, and what they’re not. These notebooks are awesome and I can’t help but giggle at the drawings that appear on the covers. Anyway, without further-a-do the winner is:

Lesha aka comment number 2! She has been contacted and tomorrow I shall be sending her lovely prize. Check back in a week or so, Grim and I are going to host another giveaway. I’ll let you know more details soon. For now, I just wanted to let the world know.

Just a Couple Reminders

Wednesday, December 5th, 2007

I wanted to let people know that tomorrow is the start of the busy weekend that awaits.

  • I’m going to the Imaginary Invalent play at my school tomorrow. If you live in New York, than I recommend you go to City College and enjoy a free show. It will run, Thurs-Sat at 7pm. I’m scheduled to enjoy this play tomorrow and write about it for class. I may share here, I just realized that I never wrote about the other 2 plays I went to.
  • Friday I have an art opening at the Graduate Center for Latinoamerican art. I also need to write about this for class.
  • Friday is also the Shawnimals show at MPH
  • I will also be having dinner with Dacosta, I think?!!!
  • Saturday is the Kaniza Release Party at ToyQube. If I don’t have dinner with Dacosta on Friday I shall attack him on Saturday. =) Then I’ll take his soul! I’m evil!

FINALLY!!

  • Saturday is the last day people can submit a comment to win the UglyDoll notebook set. It seems Uglydolls weren’t as big of a hit as I thought they would be. =( Ah well, it gives the current competitors a 50% chance of winning!!!

p.s. I have finished reading Junot Diaz’s book. I will write a review some time this weekend. I have now started reading the first book Chuck Palahniuk ever wrote, and the only book of his I have not read. yay!

Choke

Wednesday, December 5th, 2007

Thanks to a new-found friend at school, I have become addicted to this trashy celebrity blog. Egh! I like to pride myself on never having bought a gossip magazine, except for that one time I went to Texas and bought like 4 magazines in one night. Ever since, I know what I know about celebrities through conversations with people in my life. I hang with people that are caught up in the world of gossiping. Anyway, one GREAT thing that has come out of my trashy subscription is the news of Chuck Palahniuk’s book Choke heading to the big screen. Most of you are familiar with “Fight Club” which was also written by Palahniuk and I was introduced to the author through Survivor, another work that is heading to the big screen.

Anyway, the title of the book pretty much describes what the book is about. The protagonist, Victor Mancini, runs a scam on innocent people by choking in restaurants and then accepting the money of people who have “saved” his life using the Heimlich maneuver. He realizes that people love being heroes and he can bank on that. It’s pretty pathetic, but Palahniuk does an amazing job developing this character.

To be quite honest, I love what he does with all of his characters, and at the end of the day I appreciate how much time and effort he puts into the neurotic behaviors of his characters. I should also say that the 3 works mentioned above; Survivor, Fight Club, and Choke; are in my opinion his best works. Also, I placed them in the order that I most favorite. Also, I have now only read the ending to one book. That being, Survivor. This may be due to the “editor” in me, but I didn’t feel the need to continue reading. Somewhere near the end, I found I was satisfied with the information he provided me with or things seemed summed up and I feared he’d go downhill so I stopped. I’ve been highly satisfied with his books and I think it has a lot to do with my choice of purposely ignoring the end. Funny enough, the blogger who provided the above information confirmed the fact that Palahniuk doesn’t have satisfying endings, but has great character development. Currently, I have his first published novel in my possession and will soon read and write my thoughts on it. I hear it’s better than Survivor.

[This is from: "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" another great movie]

A bonus bit of information is who they’ve casted to play Victor Mancini. SAM ROCKWELL!! He’s such a great guy, and, as one of my other friends said, “I love him ‘cus he always looks strung out.” He’s perfect for the roll. I really hope the movie turns out well.

The Super Heroes (Heroin) Edition

Tuesday, December 4th, 2007

This is a quick share. I am a sucker for strong female characters, so when I found out Wonder Woman would be getting her own live action film, I was thrilled. I’ve had constant debates with my friends about who would make a great Wonder Woman, I personally chose Catherine Zeta-Jones, but she doesn’t have enough of the muscular cuts that our Amazonian woman does. Anyway, in addition to the live-action Wonder Woman movie, a Justice League movie is also in production. Wonder Woman is part of the Justice League (and though I’m not sure the same woman will play both roles) and according to WWTDD [What Would Tyler Durden Do?] the woman of our dreams has been announced.

Her name is Megan Gale. Apparently she’s an Australian model. I’ve never heard of her or the guy they’ve chosen to play the Dark Knight aka Batman. If you want more images of the woman, check out: WWTDD’s blog

What do you guys think about her? Do you think she has what it takes to be Wonder Woman?

In much smaller news, if you weren’t aware of it, Threadless is having a $10 t-shirt sale. Actually, they’ve been having a $10 sale for about 2 weeks now and it ends next week. This is also another great opportunity to get presents for people. It doesn’t just apply for the holidays, but for any occasion. I was looking through my newsletter and wanted to share one of their new designs.

The shirt is titled: The Beginning, and I think it’s hilarious. Act now and you can have your very own shirt for $10. Click on the image to go to Threadless and enjoy the galore that is their catalog.

A Kid Robot Present for All

Monday, December 3rd, 2007

Clearly right now the holiday season is 3 weeks away and if you haven’t started your holiday shopping, don’t worry, Kid Robot’s going to help a little. I just visited the site, and from November 21st- January 4th they’ve prepared over a dozen holiday gift packages to purchase. The prices vary from $19.99-$99.99. Follow the link to check out all their packages. I must admit that I am going to take advantage of this opportunity, especially since there’s a lot of people I want to extend my gratitude to- packages like: Inner Circle Stocking Stuffer Bundle and Spiked Eggnog Stocking Stuffer Bundle. I am looking to purchase the Gorillaz packages for myself, I can’t help it, I need all the sets. [Kid Robot Holiday Packages]

Uglydoll Notebook Giveaway

Uglydoll Notebook Set

In light of next week’s Uglycon on the West Coast, I have decided to giveaway an Uglydoll notebook set. The notebook set comes with 4 small notebooks featuring our favorite uglies. If you want a chance to win these notebooks, just drop a comment below and enter your real email address where it is requested. I will generate a random number through one of those nifty number generators and contact the winner to get his/her mailing address. This giveaway will run from today, December 3rd through Saturday, December 8th. The second midnight strikes, the comments will be closed and a winner will be chosen. Good Luck! I will delete any repeat comment submissions.

Also, I know its not fair that I’m only giving away 1 notebook set. But that’s all I have to give the world. I will not split them up and pick 4 people. The winner should have the luxury of opening up his/her set of 4 the same way I opened mine up, without it being tampered. I hope you guys understand. =)

The night with Ron English

Ron English CreatureIn the last post I mentioned that Vinyl Pulse reported Ron English was having a holiday party/ toy release at Toy Tokyo’s Showroom. The announcement was so last minute that I wasn’t sure I’d be able to attend, fortunately I was. I arrived to the Showroom a little past 8pm and Ron was nowhere in sight when I got there. I toured the room and took a look at his prints, small and large, and his new XL McSupersize. I should admit that I don’t own a single Ron English vinyl. I’m a fan of his works, but something about his pieces doesn’t grab my attention the way other artists do. I think it’s due to the colors he uses. Either way, I really do LOVE his prints. His pieces are filled with lots of statements about the society we live in. I took a couple pictures, but had a lot of trouble getting shots I really liked. There was an odd odor in the room and it was packed like there was no tomorrow.

When Ron did arrive though, I got him to sketch something for me in my book of souls. He went with his rabbit creature, which I was very grateful for and I wasn’t able to chit-chat with him much because a friend of his was already catching up with him and I didn’t want to be rude. He arrived with a surprise, an Super XL McSupersize. Check out the pictures when you get a chance. [Ron English Flickr Set]
