Argh! My thoughts on Pirates

Friday came along and the number one thing to do for the weekend was to go see Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End. I was very excited to see the movie, mainly because part two ended so blah to me. I know the ending was supposed to let you know there would be a third part on its way, but it wasn’t even a cliffhanger, it was just there. So I wanted this movie to end. I shall warn you all now that *SPOILERS* are ahead. Before that though… If you haven’t seen it and you definitely know you’re going to see it, watch the movie past the credits. There is an additional scene. Now…

SPOILER ALERT

The Beginning:

At the beginning of the movie we’re brought back to the mainland where things have turned a grim page. Anyone who’s been associated with any kind of piracy is being hung, killed, capoot! This scene was actually quite awesome, not the killing of course. But when the little boy was going to be hung and he began to sing that pirate tune, I was pleasantly delighted. The song was very “London Bridge is Falling Down” kind of feeling. If you don’t know the history of this song, you should look it up. Its actually quite morbid, even though little girls all over America still hold hands in a circle and fall at the end.

Onto the rest of the movie. I ended up getting confused with William and Elizabeth’s relationship. Obviously something happened between the second and third movie, but Elizabeth was no longer “sure” about being with William? I don’t know what the hell happened, this confused me. In the first and second movie, she’s all about getting dirty to get her man back, and then in this movie she’s confused. Not only did their relationship have my confused, but so did Davy Jones relationship with Calypso. There really was no need to bring in their love story, other than explaining that she is the Goddess he fell in love with when he took ownership of the Flying Dutchman. Their relationship was pointless.

Along with the Calypso character, one thing that really urked me was this whole build up about her goddess form. How powerful she was and whatnot, and when they release her from her human form she turns into this giant woman?!! Then she falls apart into thousands of crabs and causes a storm? Whatever, I can handle her goddess powers, they sucked.

Captain Jack Sparrow is still the most entertaining character in the movie. This has nothing to do with me having a crazy crush on Johnny Depp, but he’s just so random. I found the scene of him on the island quite entertaining. Mainly because he’s deserted and he’s talking to a stone, though it turns out to be a really cute white crab. I’m not sure what was up with that, but it made for a cute scene. I wanted to own one of those white crabs, and the fact that they all gathered to move his ship to shore was also unbelievable… then again, it is a movie. I did think that his whole, “good Sparrow, bad Sparrow” situation was odd. It’s as though the director felt there wasn’t enough Depp in the movie so why not put Depp in the shot 2-3-4-5 times? It was both entertaining and annoying.

Barbossa is really cute, I know you think this is odd. I thought the whole being controlled by Lord Beckett was simply delusional. I mean come on, he’s got a crew of dead people working for him and they couldn’t overthrown they live humans? I know his heart was at steak, literally, but I’m sure he could’ve revolted. I did like his slight tear when he was thinking about Calypso… and that actor happens to be one of my favorite Englishmen.

The end:

I didn’t like that Lord Beckett’s command basically got defeated very quickly. I mean, they seemed to be controlling the waters and suddenly the commander of the Royal Navy doesn’t react. What?!! That man was a strong asshole throughout the movie and out of nowhere his character completely turns into this non-reactive dummy. What is up with that?

The credits:

Now, you just sat through a 3 hour movie, last thing you want to do is sit around for the credits. Turns out there is an additional scene post-credits. If you didn’t know about this, it sucks you didn’t get to see it. Its basically 10 years later, William comes back from the other side to reunite with Elizabeth and their child. Yep, apparently when you have sex on the beach before you go away for a long time, your sperm gets a lot more potent. She has a child. I guess you didn’t miss much, but still worth seeing it.

I feel satisfied with the finale, I don’t think it needed to be that long. They really could’ve cut out a lot of stuff and included that last scene maybe while the credits were scrolling. I don’t want to sit around!!
